I still find myself looking at items in Lowe’s or Wal-mart and think, “How could that be modified to fit on a wheelchair?” I still have a desire to tinker and invent things that inexpensively solve challenges created by special-needs. I have even been brainstorming about a portable misting station that has a self-contained water supply. That is so needed here in the South during the summer! So, I still maintain the blog Uncommon Needs. It has all of the more technical stuff about equipment, medications, feeding pumps, etc. It also has links to equipment providers and a few ideas I came up with, such as a beach wheelchair that was cheaper to make than to buy one. There is also my special-needs bike trailer on there. These are the more popular posts for the summer. Please contact me if you have any questions or if you have ideas others can benefit from, please share them here or on the Uncommon Needs blog where appropriate.

Jeff, I found your post about the beach wheelchair via a google search.I wanted to say that I am sorry for the loss of your beautiful Macayla. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with other parents who need these resources. I was researching a way to allow my daughter Lauren (23 years old) to enjoy the beach with us.My mom has lived at Carolina Beach,NC for 14 years, but we could never take my daughter for a walk on the beach. We found that the town had a beach wheelchair but it was just a PVC chair on beach wheels.Your design is so much better! You should consider producing this design for towns to provide disabled access to their beach.

Jeff, My son is now in a wheel chair at 27 years old. We would like to take him to the beach again but now it is a challenge. Buying a commercially built chair is too expensive. I found your post on using a Zero Gravity chair for the chair and it looks great. I would like to build one between now and July to be able to get him down on the beach. Can you send me any plans or sketches that you might have so that I can get the project started.
